Understanding the

Trainer Rating System™

Within the health and fitness industry exists a wide array of personal trainer certification associations, each claiming to be the best. Since there exists no real industry oversight on personal training, many organizations have put forth "certifications" that lack, what many in the industry consider, standard mechanisms of assurance and oversight.

As a result of this potentially dangerous void of accreditation of certification associations the Personal Trainer Listing Service has, since 1999,  independently and diligently worked within the health and fitness community to set apart the premier certification organizations and their trainers from others that lack the essential variables to quantifiably guarantee their certified trainers possess the standard minimum qualifications to work with private clients.

The Variables of Assurance:

  • Proctored written examinations - This is the first step in classifying the organizations. If an organizations allows a trainer to mail in an examination it does not meet this standard. In order for an organization to meet this standard, the examination must be proctored and supervised to better ensure the integrity of test results.

  • Practical Examination - Once a written test is passed, the leading certifying organizations require that those being tested demonstrate their skills at instructing clients on proper form, technique and safety. This live and in-person demonstration allows the certifying agency the opportunity to correct bad technique while giving the new trainer greater professional confidence.

  • NCCA, USDE, CHEA Accreditation - The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) is the accreditation body of NOCA. Certification programs may apply and be accredited by the NCCA if they demonstrate compliance with each accreditation standard. NCCA's Standards exceed the requirements set forth by the American Psychological Association and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. CHEA and the U.S. Department of Education have established standards for the purpose of recognizing quality accreditation bodies. These standards ensure that organizations which accredit academic institutions and certification programs are committed to advancing the quality and accountability of the programs they accredit.

  • Education - While a college degree is not required to be a personal trainer, it does demonstrate a greater level, depth and breadth of knowledge that aids any trainer regardless of degree. The greater the degree (Associates, Bachelors, Masters, Ph.D) the higher the level of education the respective trainer has accumulated. Therefore, trainers with college degrees will earn additional rating points.

  • Experience - There is no greater teacher then real life experience. Trainers are additionally rated based on the number of years of consecutive certified personal training experience they have accumulated.

Within the combination of these elements, every trainer listed on our site is rated accordingly and independently. We are not funded, financed, staffed, directed or consulted by any officer of any certification association. Trainers can try it now (currently $9.99 per month)
